XVII.
Sic lusibus aptior orbis.
SI quem superbis auxit honoribus,
Et invidendo Fors posuit loco,
Ponat tumorem, nec salutem
Arbitrio popularis auræ
Confidat, Euris dulcè furentibus.
Dat illa ludos Nereïdum gregi
Phaselus, imprægnata ventis
Cûi nimiùm tumuêre vela.
Fortuna longâ nota Tyrannide, &
Ludum proteruum ludere contumax
Et donat, & tollit secures,
Inque throno locat, inque turbâ:
Vt turma follem ludicra suscitat,
Intus coacto quæ tumet Aeolo,
Iamque ima, iam suprema verrit,
Nec spatio requiescit vno.
Pax nulla folli, nulla potentibus.
Pompeius, Orbis cûi fuerat pila,

Hoc Sortis est pila in duello
Carnifici data præda ferro.
Vento repleuit Gloria Cæsarem,
Cæsar repleuit sanguine Curiam.
Quot bellicis notus trop hæis,
Tot celeber Marius ruinis.
Fortuna Crœsum Turgida prodidit,
Victorque Crœsi Cyrus, & vltimis
Formido, deînde risus oris
Fœmineas satiauit iras.
O mœsta diræ scena Tragœdiæ!
Tot clara Regum nomina, tot Ducum,
Dum sorte ventosâ tumescunt,
Sanguineo periêre ludo.

Si par vn beau semblant Fortune te mignonne,
Te caresse d'honneurs, & mil estats te donne;
Craignez (ie la cognois) elle tient pour delices
De veoir ses fauoris donner en precipices.

Hoe meer ghy hopt / en hoopt
Nieuw' eere / ghelt en goet;
Hoe eerder dat ghy loopt
Tot val / en teghenspoet.
In 't spel den meersten hoop
Heeft meerst den quaetsten koop:
Dat meerst verheven staet
Wordt alder-eerst ghehaet.
