Sertorius corporis robore, atque animi consilio parem naturæ indulgentiam
expertus, proscriptione Sullana dux Lusitanorum fieri coactus, cùm eos ora-
tione flectere non posset, ne cum Romanorum vniuersa acie confligere vellent,
vafro consilio ad suam sententiam perduxit. Duos enim in conspectu eorum
constituit equos, alterum validissimum, alterum infirmissimum: ac deinde validi
caudam ab imbecillo sene paulatim carpi, infirmi, à iuuene eximiarum virium,
vniuersam conuelli iussit. Obtemperatum imperio est. Sec cùm adolescentis
dextra irrito se labore fatigat, senio confecta manus ministerium executa est.
Tunc pro concione subiecit: Equi caudæ consimilem esse Romanorum exerci-
tum, cuius partes aliquis aggrediens opprimere possit: vniuersum conatus pro-
sternere, celeriùs tradiderit victoriam quàm occupauerit.

Tout cœur fier & hautain
Par douceur se rend traictable,
Et souple soubs la main.

Qui trop precipité veut aut parfait atteindre,
De maints ardus proiects qu' il auoit desseigné,
Se recule plustost & s'en voit esloigné:
Car qui embrasse trop ne peut bien tout estreindre,
